play the man

“Be of good courage; let us play the man for our people and the cities of our God. And may the Lord do what seems good to Him.” 2Samuel 10:12 AMP

The head of the army three millennia ago was caught with enemy forces in front and behind. He divided his forces in two, with one force against the opposing armies in the rear, the other he led to attack the armies in front. His words to the troops were powerful but few.

Matthew Henry writes:

  • “Be of good courage and let us play the men, not for pay and preferment, for honour and fame, but for our people, and for the cities of our God, for the public safety and welfare, in which the glory of God is so much interested. God and our country was the word.”

In times of seemingly overwhelming odds where much is out of our control, we are at our best when we step up to the part we are given, serve the people whom God has placed in our care, and trust in Him who alone determines the outcome.
